Lose weight, die sooner

June 15, 2010

Here's a very cool heads up from Bri at Fat Lot of Good who's found a study recently published that shows that losing more than 15% of your body weight actually INCREASES your chance of death (unless you're a man with cardiovascular disease.  Then losing 5-15% is ok and might help).

So me, at 185lbs, if I lost 15% of my body weight, let's see, that's about 30lbs, would put me at 155lbs.  At my height, that changes my bmi to 27.5, which is STILL 'overweight'.  I'd have to lose 15 more pounds in order to be considered a 'normal' weight for my height, but that's a lot more than 15% of my body weight.  That's not good for me, obviously.  I can't imagine what I'd look like at 140lbs.  BUT! Since all our "health" science is based off BMI, it MUST be healthy!   That's some obesity paradox right there.  Hang on, I just rolled my eyes so hard I have to pick them up off the floor.
