Seasonal Change

October 30, 2012

The rainy season is in full swing here on the Wet Coast (my sympathies to everyone who just went through Sandy on the East Coast!) and it's time to dig out the winter wear from the storage closet. When I was a kid I remember doing this with my mom and sister; going down into the basement and into the closet under the stairs, digging out the boxes and bags of clothes, trying everything on and seeing what fit and what didn't, both of my own stuff and my sister's. There's nothing wrong with hand-me-downs! It was a tradition, like putting up Hallowe'en decorations or a turkey at Thanksgiving, and happened at roughly the same time. Now that I'm out here and there are really only two seasons, wet and dry, I've missed it. Last year we did a bit of changing, but not much. This year going through my winter clothes will be interesting as I'm sure not a lot is going to fit.

I'm down to two long sleeved shirts that fit, a wack of overshirts and sweaters that are huge now and hang off me (unflattering, Ryan would say), two pairs of jeans, one pair of jogging pants (huge!) and a pair of dresspants (also huge). Most of the stuff in the winter tote is going to be too big, but we dont' have it in the budget for me to go out and buy a new wardrobe, even if I do head over to Value Village. What I'd really like to do is go to Ricki's-I was there a week or two ago and saw some really nice sweaters and long sleeve shirts in great jewel colours. Alas, it's not meant to be. I'll make do with what I've got, as usual.

Do you do a seasonal change-over? Have a favorite fall or winter outfit? An item you just can't survive without?
